Eve Hietamies, Day-Care Day – (Tarhapäivä)
The long-anticipated return of Antti and Paavo Pasanen!
Five-year-old Terttu throws father and son for a loop with her stuffed ponies, sequins and fully formed female logic
Life has slid into its groove for Antti and Paavo Pasanen, whom we met in the novel Night-Time Feeding. Now old enough for day-care, Paavo is an expert in Pokemons and matchbox cars, and his dad Antti is no longer afraid to trust in common sense. Another duo, Enni and her daughter Terttu, are in the same life situation and have grown important to Antti and Paavo.
But everyday life is tossed into turmoil when Terttu becomes a temporary member of the Pasanen family. Antti doesn’t have a clue as to the countless ways in which a little girl’s existence differs from the life of a boy, not to mention how many shades of pink there are in the world. Terttu’s extended visit tries the nerves of the Pasanen men, but also proves instructive – in at times unexpected ways.
In her previous novel Night-Time Feeding, writer and screenwriter Eve Hietamies portrayed the everyday life of a single parent and the child-rearing climate of the 2010s with a warm, tart humour and an appealingly skewed take.
”Hietamies has a gift for handling heavy topics with spirit and verve.” – Hämeen Sanomat
